One to Watch: Hippo Campus

Written by: Raegan Cleary

The temperature is dropping, and it’s time to find the perfect soundtrack for getting cozy. Look no further than St. Paul, Minnesota based indie rock band Hippo Campus. The band consists of Jake Luppen (vocals/guitar), Nathan Stocker (guitar/vocals), Zach Sutton (bass) and Whistler Allen (drums/vocals). Hippo Campus has recently made their way around the festival scene performing at South by Southwest, Lollapalooza, Reading and Leads. Now they are ready to take the music world by storm with their upcoming debut album, releasing early next year.

Their sound is a mix of upbeat songs that will get you jumping around, like their song “Violet” for example, but they also have songs that are perfect for relaxing like their song “South”. Their contrast of upbeat and calming sounds perfectly reflect the band’s message of emerging adulthood, something that is fast and exciting but needs to be cherished and not taken too seriously.  Vocalist Jake Luppen’s voice is warm and comforting but still raw and gritty. It sounds like your favorite sweater on a chilly day.  This is the perfect music to blast while cutting loose and observing the changing leaves with your closest friends.

Sometimes, with a band the focus is on one individual member, but their constant interaction, like dancing with each other, focuses on the entire band. This helps strengthen what is said in their songs. Plus when you see them bounce around you can’t help but do the same and feel that connection as well.
